Closing the Gap

Molsky's Mountain Drifters

https://shop.bandwear.com/collections/bruce-molsky-shop/products/bmo002 "Closing The Gap" is a snapshot of the Mountain Drifters after a period of intense touring, of learning each other’s “isms” and instincts, and as a result slowly developing our collective “isms” and instincts as a unit. This album is MMD in our natural and instinctual state of BEING; raw, playful and free, the way the music is meant to be. The music is hopeful and optimistic and comes from the heart, and so we start the story off with this: “There’s a bright side somewhere, ain’t gonna rest until I find it,” . And we look at the world all around us, and that thought continues to resonate, The title track Allison de Groot's “Closing the Gap” feels like a race. Each note tries to catch up with the next, narrowing the gap and steadily propelling the tune from one section to the next. . .

Rauland Rambles: A Meeting of Masters - Bruce Molsky, Arto Järvelä and Ånon Egeland

https://shop.bandwear.com/collections/bruce-molsky-shop/products/bmo005 At the Rauland International Winter Festival in February of this year, Bruce Molsky, Arto Järvelä and Ånon Egeland – all highly respected tradition-bearers and major figures in their respective traditions – met to play a concert together. A few free days scheduled before a concert at Oslo’s Rikscenen the following week turned into a session in the intimate studio at Rauland’s Department of Traditional Art and Traditional Music. The recordings they made there, together with live material from the Rikscenen concert, resulted in this album by three fantastic players at the top of their game.

RAULAND RAMBLES REVIEWS
Music from the Appalachian side of the fjord. A gorgeous set from this Norwegian-American-Finish ensemble suffers none of the awkwardness that sometimes beleaguers cross-cultural meetings. The three fiddlers are each considered national treasures in their own countries, and they find simpatico grooves on material that ranges from “Shaking Off the Acorns” and “Cumberland Gap” to “Sjøfløytehamborg.” Some of the tunes are set very traditionally. At other moments, there are unexpected delights. On “Ruben,” the birch flute evokes Ruben’s lonesome train whistle, and a jaunty clawhammer banjo keeps perfect three-quarter time on “Harvelandsvalsen.”  SF Classical Voice: Hot Music From Cold Climates
